Ferriss combines Pareto's principle with Parkinson's Law as two reciprocal constraints. The 80/20 step limits the task list to the activities most responsible for the desired result, so the selected work should not require much time. Parkinson's Law then limits the available time, forcing another distinction between essential and merely plausible work. Ferriss defines the mechanism as a task swelling in perceived complexity and importance in direct proportion to the time allotted. The pairing therefore attacks both sides of expansion: remove low-yield tasks, then prevent the remaining work from filling an unnecessarily generous schedule. The output is not simply faster execution; it is a smaller set of result-producing tasks completed under a boundary that exposes what is truly important.

State the result that must exist when the work is finished. Separate that result from the activities normally associated with producing it.

Protect the essential
When the work does not fit, simplify or remove lower-value elements instead of automatically extending the deadline. Finish the components tied directly to the desired output.
Watch out Urgency alone does not prove that a task matters.
In the wild
A knowledge worker first lists every activity proposed for a report, then identifies the few sections that determine the decision it supports. The worker sets a same-day deadline and removes formatting and research that do not change that decision, while preserving the evidence required for accuracy.

Compressing every task
The pairing first removes unimportant tasks; it does not demand that every existing activity be performed faster.
Treating perceived complexity as fixed
Parkinson's Law predicts that perceived complexity changes with the time allotted, so the original estimate should be challenged.
