Gil calls the single most important thing for breaking into any industry going to its headquarters or cluster, and dismisses 'you can do anything from anywhere' as BS. Every industry aggregates geographically: nobody tells an aspiring filmmaker to go to Dallas — they say go to Hollywood; nobody tells a would-be hedge-funder to go to Seattle — they say New York. For tech, his team's unicorn analysis shows roughly half of private technology market cap is in the US and half of that in the Bay Area, but for AI specifically 91% of global private AI market cap sits in one 10x10 area. Defense tech clusters in Southern California near SpaceX and Anduril; fintech and crypto lean toward New York. Being in the cluster is what put Gil in the right networks, and his own access — Airbnb, Stripe — came organically from helping founders there, not from chasing deals.

Origin

Gil credits his career to moving to Silicon Valley around 2000 and staying, and backs the claim with his team's analysis of where private technology and AI market cap geographically aggregate.

Core principles

  • 01'You can do anything from anywhere' is BS for breaking into an industry
  • 02Every industry physically aggregates: film in Hollywood, finance in New York, AI in the Bay Area
  • 03Market cap and talent concentrate geographically — 91% of AI private market cap sits in one 10x10 area
  • 04Being in the cluster puts you in the networks where access happens organically

How to run it

  1. 1

    Find the cluster

Identify the one place your target industry physically concentrates — AI in the Bay Area, defense in Southern California, fintech in New York.

Pro tip Follow where the market cap and talent aggregate, not where it's cheaper to live.

Watch out Remote participation forfeits the network proximity that drives access.

  2. 2

Move there and get into the networks

Relocate and embed in the local networks rather than trying to do it from a distance.

Pro tip Smart people aggregate together, so being present is how you meet more of them.

  3. 3

    Earn access by helping

Gain entry organically by helping people with strategy and intros, which is how deals and opportunities come to you.

Pro tip Offer advice and you often get to invest; the access is a byproduct of being useful in the cluster.

Watch out Chasing deals from outside the network rarely works.

In the wild

91% of AI market cap in one 10x10 area

Gil's team found that while historically about a quarter of private tech market cap was in the Bay Area, for AI specifically 91% of global private market cap sits in a single 10-by-10 area.

The concentration means anyone serious about AI should be physically in the Bay Area to access the networks.

Common mistakes

Believing 'anywhere' works

Trying to break into a clustered industry remotely cuts you off from the network proximity that creates access.

Is it for you?

Best for

Anyone trying to break into a concentrated industry — tech, finance, film, defense.

Not ideal for

Established operators whose network already spans the industry regardless of location.
