This B2B sales framework begins with mutual qualification rather than persuasion theater. Because large organizations can research basic product facts independently, the salesperson earns a role by helping solve a consequential problem and guiding a difficult buying process. Early in the engagement, both sides test whether the opportunity is real: if they can solve the stated problem together, is the buyer prepared to install the solution? The buyer then shares candid organizational information, previous purchasing behavior, and the real decision structure. The salesperson reciprocates with truth, expertise, and guidance that can help the internal buyer succeed. If either side will not make that commitment, they stop. The output is either an honest, deeply informed sales process or a fast no.

Origin

Godin attributes the method to Mahan Khalsa's book Let's Get Real or Let's Not Play and explains its use in complex B2B sales.

Core principles

  • 01Complex buyers can research basic information without a salesperson
  • 02Valuable sales time requires reciprocal commitment
  • 03Truth beats entertainment and superficial rapport
  • 04The salesperson helps the buyer learn how to buy
  • 05An unreal opportunity should end early

How to run it

  1. 1

    Establish the real problem

Confirm that the organization has a consequential, costly problem worth solving.

Pro tip Translate the problem into operational stakes.

Watch out Do not manufacture urgency around a trivial issue.

  2. 2

    Test commitment

Ask whether solving the problem together would make the buyer ready to install the system.

Watch out Interest without a path to action is not a qualified opportunity.

  3. 3

    Agree on candor

Set the expectation that neither side will waste the other's time and both will tell the truth.

Pro tip Make reciprocity explicit at the beginning.

  4. 4

    Map how buying happens

Learn the organization chart, relevant stakeholders, and how comparable complex purchases were made.

Pro tip Study real prior decisions rather than relying on the formal RFP alone.

Watch out Superficial rapport does not reveal the decision system.

  5. 5

    Teach the purchase

Use expertise to help the buyer navigate the organization and buy the solution that addresses the problem.

Pro tip Make the internal champion more effective.

Watch out Do not replace guidance with entertainment or spam.

  6. 6

    Proceed or stop

Continue only while the problem, commitment, and reciprocal truth remain real.

Watch out Sunk time is not a reason to keep playing.

In the wild

Failing assembly line

Godin describes a buyer with a five-million-dollar assembly line that is failing. The salesperson asks whether a jointly proven solution would lead to installation, then requests the organization chart and history of comparable purchases while helping the buyer navigate the acquisition.

The seller and buyer either build a truthful path to a high-value decision or end an unreal pursuit early.

Common mistakes

Performing superficial rapport

Golf outings and guessed personal preferences do not solve the buyer's complex organizational problem.

Competing only on the RFP

A cheaper response does not replace understanding the real decision process and operational stakes.

Is it for you?

Best for

Skilled salespeople selling expensive, consequential systems to complex organizations.

Not ideal for

Low-cost transactional purchases that require little diagnosis or organizational change.
