Naval builds this on Feynman's line that he learned very early the difference between knowing the name of something and knowing something. The input is any concept you believe you understand. The mechanism is a forced re-expression test: can you describe it in ten different ways in simple sentences from the ground up and rederive whatever you need? If you can only recite the label, you have memorization, and memorization collapses the moment reality asks a follow-up question. Naval's illustration is Feynman's father on a walk: knowing that a bird is a particular warbler tells you nothing about the bird, only about the humans who named it — the real knowledge is that it stands on one leg, picks lice from its feathers, eats these things, flies this way, has these predators. His applied case is accounting: most business people do not know accounting, and even many accountants have fancy words for things but do not understand the principle underneath, so anyone who understands how the pieces actually move on the board gains a real advantage in negotiating deals. He notes this takes days or weeks with a decent YouTube tutorial or book, not a master's degree. Naval formed this from Richard Feynman, his intellectual hero, whom he describes as a full stack intellectual hacker of life. Feynman's bird-naming story and his quote about knowing the name of something became Naval's default filter for detecting fake expertise in business, especially in accounting and finance.

How to run it

Write down what you claim to know
State the concept and your claim about it in a single plain sentence, using the technical term exactly once.
Pro tip Do this in writing. Spoken claims hide their own vagueness.

Strip the jargon and re-explain five ways
Explain the same concept five different times without using the technical term at all, each time from a different angle — mechanism, consequence, analogy, failure mode, counterexample.
Pro tip Naval's bar is being able to rearticulate it in every language you know.
Watch out If two of your five explanations are the same explanation reworded, you have one explanation.

Rederive from the basics with nothing open
Close every tab and rebuild the concept from arithmetic, statistics, probability or the domain's underlying primitives. If you cannot, you have located your actual foundation gap.
Watch out Do not paper the gap with a higher-level abstraction; go down, not up.

Go back and reread the basics
Rather than advancing to more advanced material, return to the foundations and read them again. Naval describes this as the thing he gets stuck on a lot — keep going back and reading the basics over and over.

Keep jargon only as compression
Reintroduce the technical vocabulary deliberately, as a shorthand for communicating with people who already share the underlying model — never as a stand-in for it.

In the wild
Feynman's father would take him on walks and point at birds. Rather than teaching the name — this is such-and-such a warbler — he taught what the bird does: it stands on one leg, it picks lice out of its feathers, it eats these things, it flies this way for that reason, these are its predators and these are its prey. Naval's point is that the name tells you about humans, not about the bird.

Naval observes that a lot of business people do not know accounting, and even a lot of accountants have fancy words for things but when you dig underneath do not really understand the principle of what is going on below. Tim adds that a few days with a decent YouTube tutorial or book on the basics of accounting will let you make significantly better decisions — this is learning foul shots, not becoming Michael Jordan.

Naval uses the then-new GPT-3 text completion algorithm as the counterexample: people said the AI is here and will take all the jobs because it produces really plausible sounding writing. But if you asked it why did you write that, or what does that mean, it would very quickly fall apart — plausible output without an underlying model.

Common mistakes
Building the tall edifice before the foundation
Naval notes that schools push pre-calc and calculus onto kids who are not even that good at basic math. Advancing up the ladder while the foundation is shaky produces a seductive academic structure that collapses under any real-world question.
Treating a definition as an explanation
A lot of the time we define something with another definition, or throw out a piece of jargon as if that means we know something. Substituting one label for another feels like progress and produces zero decision advantage.
Assuming the credentialed person understands
Naval finds this common in accounting: professionals protect their knowledge with terms, but the principle underneath is often missing. Deferring to jargon because it comes from a title is exactly how you end up on the wrong side of a deal.
Trying to understand too many things
The good news, Naval says, is you do not have to understand that many things — nature uses only the longest threads to weave her tapestry. Spreading across many concepts guarantees memorization depth on all of them and understanding on none.
