Ferriss describes it as looking for the different seatbelts you can use in life. The observation is that we already accept a class of controls that are cheap, easy, and almost never used: a seatbelt though you have never had a head-on collision, a fire extinguisher though your kitchen has never caught fire. What makes them rational is not the probability of the event but the severity of it combined with the negligible cost of the control. He first applied the framing deliberately during early COVID, asking what minimally inconvenient, easy-to-do things dramatically mitigate risk. The heuristic then generalizes: in any domain, search specifically for the cheap-and-easy controls that cap catastrophic downside, and install them without waiting for the risk to feel real.

Ferriss says he first thought about this explicitly with respect to COVID early on, asking what minimally inconvenient, easy-to-do things could dramatically mitigate risk, and later generalized it to the seatbelt and fire extinguisher pattern.

Enumerate the catastrophic outcomes
For the domain in question, list the outcomes whose downside is severe and largely irreversible, regardless of how unlikely each feels.

Ask what the seatbelt would be
For each outcome, name the control that would meaningfully cap the downside. Do not filter for feasibility yet.

Filter for cheap and minimally inconvenient
Keep only the controls that are low cost and require little ongoing effort. Expensive or high-friction controls belong to a different decision.

Install and forget
Put the control in place once so it works passively. The value comes from it being there, not from thinking about it.
Watch out A control that requires constant vigilance will erode; prefer structural ones.
In the wild
Ferriss's illustration is deliberately mundane. Most people keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen despite never having had a kitchen fire, and wear a seatbelt on the highway despite never having had a head-on collision. Neither decision is justified by the probability of the event; both are justified by its severity and by the near-zero cost of the control. The question he wants people to carry into other domains is: where else can we take very small steps that are easy and low cost and prevent dramatic downside risk?

Common mistakes
Weighting by probability instead of severity
Because the event has never happened, the control feels unnecessary. That reasoning would also remove the seatbelt.
Reaching for expensive controls first
The power of the heuristic is the cost asymmetry. A costly, high-friction control is a normal trade-off decision, not a seatbelt.

High-frequency decisions where expected value rather than tail severity should drive the choice.
