The input is anyone reaching for melatonin. The mechanism is one mental model plus one dose ceiling. Walker's model: melatonin is the starting official at a 100 metre Olympic race. It brings all the racers to the line and begins the race, but it does not participate in the race itself. Sleep generation is a whole different set of chemicals. That model immediately predicts the meta-analytic result, which is that melatonin buys you 3.9 minutes of faster sleep onset and 2.2 percent better sleep efficiency, both close to placebo. Ask whether you fall asleep at the wrong clock time (timing) or fail to fall and stay asleep at a normal time (generation). Melatonin only addresses the first.
Pro tip Use the Olympic starting official image as the test: does your problem look like the race starting at the wrong moment, or like the race itself going badly?
Watch out If the answer is generation, no dose of melatonin fixes it and you are burning months on the wrong intervention.

Restrict use to time-zone transitions
Take melatonin while shifting between time zones and stop once you are stable in the new zone. Walker uses it himself only when going from one side of the planet to the other.
Pro tip Walker concedes a walloping dose can brute-force sleep onset on long-haul travel, which is exactly the bounded case where the tax is worth paying.
Watch out Continuing past the transition converts a legitimate circadian tool into an unstudied multi-year supplementation habit.

Cap the dose near the studied optimum
Aim for roughly 0.3 to 0.5 milligram rather than the 3, 5, or 10 milligram shelf default. Walker notes it is difficult to even find a 1 milligram product online, and half of that is the target.

Hard-stop paediatric and long-term use
Do not run high doses in children or adolescents, and do not run any dose nightly for months or years. The available reassurance study is a single blind patient dosed for 37 days, which does not generalise to 6-month, 12-month, or 5-year use.
Pro tip Walker's testosterone analogy is the useful frame: short courses recover, but nobody has established that the same is true after long-term melatonin use.
Watch out Juvenile male rats given high melatonin show testicular atrophy, and high doses block hippocampal synapse formation, which impairs learning.
In the wild
People pushed back on Walker online by citing a study showing no change in a person's own melatonin generation after high-concentration dosing. Walker read it: it is a case study in one blind individual, dosed at high concentrations for 37 days, after which withdrawal returned them to their prior production. He points out that blind patients often have a free-running circadian system with already-altered melatonin regulation, so they are not an apples-to-apples control, and 37 days does not speak to how people actually use it.
→ A single confounded case study is doing the work of a safety literature, which is why Walker says there is no scientific data to meaningfully tell the public not to have these concerns.
Ferriss described a conversation about ten years earlier with a very smart researcher who mentioned in passing that he took 8 or 10 milligrams of melatonin every night. Ferriss reasoned from first principles that supplying the body exogenously with something it produces endogenously would engage a negative feedback loop, the same way HCG relates to luteinizing hormone. Walker confirmed the thinking was correct and that the concern is shutting down the brain's own feedback.
